How common is Rare Candy in Hydreigon deck lists?

Rare Candy appeared in 332 of the 332 current tournament lists across all builds. That makes it worth checking when you compare your collection with a list. The count tells you how often the card appeared, not how many copies to run; use the full list for the exact count.

Which Trainer Cards Do Hydreigon Decks Use?

Plan the 130-damage attack around evolution and self-damage

Charge only when the attack is ready

The Hydreigon deck centres on Hydreigon, a 150-HP Darkness Stage 2. Roar in Unison attaches two Darkness Energy from the Energy Zone to itself once during your turn, then deals 30 damage to itself. An undamaged Hydreigon falls to 120 HP after one use.

Hyper Ray costs three Darkness, deals 130 and discards all attached Energy. From zero Energy, the ability plus one regular Darkness attachment supplies that cost. This is a conditional way to reload the Hydreigon deck, not free damage: count the remaining HP before using the ability again. Grass Weakness adds 20 damage.

Have both Rare Candy and Hydreigon in hand

The three tournament examples use two Deino, two Hydreigon and two Rare Candy, with no Zweilous. Rare Candy requires the matching Stage 2 in hand and a Basic already in play. It cannot be used during your first turn or on a Basic played that turn. Removing a Candy slot reduces access to the only evolution shortcut in these submitted Hydreigon lists.

Deino is a 60-HP Basic with a one-Darkness, 20-damage attack. Poké Ball finds a random Basic, so it cannot supply Hydreigon or Rare Candy. Zweilous is the normal 90-HP Stage 1, with a two-Darkness, 40-damage attack; its absence from these examples makes the Candy requirement concrete.

Use Umbreon for the Basic target

In the Umbreon Hydreigon deck, Umbreon is a 90-HP Stage 1. Its one-Darkness attack does 30, plus 50 against an opposing Active Basic. Before other effects, that is 80 against a Basic and only 30 against an evolved target. It retreats for one and has Grass Weakness +20.

Eevee has 50 HP. While this Eevee is Active, Boosted Evolution allows it to evolve during your first turn or the turn you play it; the permission does not apply while it is Benched. Eku’s example also includes one Mega Absol ex, so do not describe that complete Hydreigon list as containing only non-ex Pokémon.

Choose hand disruption or retaliation

Mega Absol ex is a 170-HP Basic. Its two-Darkness attack deals 80, reveals the opponent’s hand and discards a Supporter you choose there. Mega Sableye ex is also a 170-HP Basic, but its Darkness-plus-Colorless attack deals 80 and sets up 40 retaliation damage if it is damaged by an attack during the opponent’s next turn.

These Hydreigon decks therefore offer different printed effects, not two proven win-rate upgrades. Each Mega gives the opponent three points when Knocked Out. Keeping one available as an attacker also introduces that point risk; the personal examples use one copy of their respective Mega.

Keep Bombirdier on the Bench for retreat

Bombirdier is a 70-HP Basic. While it is Benched, Villainous Delivery reduces your Active Darkness Pokémon’s Retreat Cost by one. With one Bombirdier and no other modifiers, Hydreigon pays one instead of two to retreat. The Hydreigon deck has gained cheaper retreat, not free retreat.

Bombirdier itself attacks for 30 with one Darkness. Both the puronito and ppitopin8 originals use one copy. Removing it loses the printed retreat reduction; moving it Active also stops that Benched ability from helping the previous attacker.

Serena's Choice looks at the top three cards, takes one into hand and shuffles the others back. Copycat instead shuffles your hand away and draws as many cards as the opponent holds. Choose whether the Hydreigon deck needs one particular evolution piece or a new hand before spending the turn’s single Supporter play.

Hiking Trail refills the turn player’s hand to three at the end of each player’s turn. It helps both players and is not an immediate draw-three effect. Professor's Research draws two. Puronito uses two Serena’s Choice and two Hiking Trail; these are actual slots, not evidence that the same package is best in every Hydreigon build.

Deceptive Needle deals 10 to the opposing Active at the end of your turn only if its holder is your Active Darkness Pokémon. A 130 Hyper Ray followed by this trigger totals 140 on the same surviving target before other effects, not 150. Only one Tool can be attached to a Pokémon; Field Blower can discard a Tool from either side or a Stadium.

Cyrus selects an already damaged opposing Benched target; Sabrina lets the opponent choose the replacement. Repel requires the opposing Active to be Basic and also leaves that choice to the opponent. In the Sableye Hydreigon example, Lucky Ice Pop heals 20 from the Active, with a coin flip to return it to hand only if healing occurred. One use does not erase the ability’s full 30 self-damage.

Compare the submitted plans with the site’s lists

The selected external sources are three complete 20-card PMPT #49 submissions from October 31, 2026: Eku pairs Umbreon with Hydreigon and one Mega Absol ex; puronito uses Mega Absol ex and Bombirdier; ppitopin8 uses Mega Sableye ex and Bombirdier. All three use a two-copy Deino and Hydreigon line with two Rare Candy. The originals demonstrate real choices, not the cause of an archetype’s overall results.
