Oricorio deck guide: Safeguard vs other prints

If you searched for an oricorio deck, start by naming the print. Celestial Guardians alone prints four Basics that share the catalog name Oricorio and do completely different jobs. Oricorio prints do different jobs—Safeguard, disruption, status, or counterattack—despite sharing a name. Copying a Magnezone wall list when you own Baile Kindle, or treating Safeguard as a free win against every attack, is how most failed builds start.

The repository's dated tournament snapshot covers 30 tournaments, 5,385 decklists, and 14,657 analysed games from July 4 through August 2, 2026. In that window, Pom-Pom Oricorio shows up far more often as a tech slot than as a pure archetype: Indeedee ex / Giratina ex runs it in 100% of 110 lists (2.04% meta share), while pure Oricorio appears in only five lists (0.09% share). The short verdict

Build around Pom-Pom Safeguard when the format's best attackers are Pokémon ex and you can finish with a non-ex partner—or when you only need one or two copies as a tech wall. Do not build a Safeguard wall if your local meta is already full of non-ex attackers, Ability damage, or Status Conditions that ignore the Ability. If you actually own Baile, Pa'u, or Sensu, treat those as separate engines: Energy disruption, Confusion pressure, and revenge damage respectively.

What Safeguard actually stops

Safeguard on Pom-Pom Oricorio prevents damage done to that Pokémon by attacks from the opponent's Pokémon ex. It does not stop:

Attacks from non-ex Pokémon
Effects that are not attack damage (for example, many Ability-based damage effects, depending on exact card text)
Status Conditions, Forced Switch effects, or prize trades that remove Oricorio without needing to hit through the Ability

The official Magnezone partner feature frames the bird as a wall that locks out decks reliant on Pokémon ex attacks, then asks a non-ex Lightning finisher to convert that stall. Official strategy pages also note the reverse angle: Magnezone can attack through Safeguard when the attacker is not a Pokémon ex, and Mega Kangaskhan ex decks are vulnerable to the Ability. Treat those as teaching examples, not as a permanent tier list.

Zzzap's 50 damage is real but slow for a 70 HP Basic. A Safeguard oricorio deck that only attacks with Oricorio usually loses the prize race once the opponent parks a non-ex attacker Active. The second attacker is not optional flavor—it is the plan.

How current lists actually use Oricorio

Tech wall inside a larger shell

In the July 4–August 2 sample, A3-066's highest-volume homes are not pure bird lists:

Read that table as a decision rule: if you already own a functioning Magnezone, Giratina, or Darkrai shell, adding one or two Pom-Pom copies is usually cheaper and more truthful than forcing a mono-Oricorio 20-card list. Pure Oricorio exists, but five lists is a niche sample—useful for testing the wall idea, not for claiming a meta takeover.

Energy Zone should be Lightning for this shell. If you mix types so Sensu or Baile can also attack, you are no longer playing the Magnezone teaching list—you are playing a hybrid that needs a deliberate reason.

When the other prints are the real deck

Baile disruption (A3-034)

Kindle is a tempo tool: 40 damage plus a random Energy discard from both Active Pokémon. It can stall an opposing attachment curve, but it also risks your own Energy. Build it only when you can re-attach or win a short race after the discard. It does not share Safeguard's ex immunity.

Pa'u status (A3-076)

Dazzle Dance Confuses while dealing 40. Confusion is variance, not a wall. Pair it with partners that punish a failed Confused flip or that can finish a damaged Active before the opponent retreats.

Sensu counterattack (A3-077)

Spiteful Dance wants a Knock Out on your previous turn to jump from 20 to 80. That is a revenge line, not a lead attacker. Keep a cheap pivot ready so the bird can come Active after the Knock Out without wasting a turn retreating an empty Basic.

Decision rule and failure cases

Identify the print and Energy type first.
If it is Pom-Pom, ask whether the local meta's best attackers are Pokémon ex. If yes, Safeguard is a real tech. If no, the Ability is often a dead slot.
Name the non-ex attacker that takes prizes while Oricorio stalls—or admit you are only teching one copy into another engine.
Count Fighting weakness (+20 on Pom-Pom) and 70 HP before calling the bird a “hard wall.”

Failure modes to expect: an opposing non-ex Magnezone or Greninja sitting Active; Status Conditions that remove the wall without dealing attack damage; prize map losses when both Oricorio copies give easy Knock Outs after the Ability stops mattering; Baile discarding your own key Energy; Sensu Active before any of your Pokémon have been Knocked Out.
